Repentance (4:17 – 4:19)

Repentance

[4:17] Repentance is acceptable by GOD from those who fall in sin out of ignorance, then repent immediately thereafter. GOD redeems them. GOD is Omniscient, Most Wise.
[4:18] Not acceptable is the repentance of those who commit sins until death comes to them, then say, “Now I repent.” Nor is it acceptable from those who die as disbelievers. For these, we have prepared a painful retribution.
[4:19] O you who believe, it is not lawful for you to inherit what the women leave behind, against their will. You shall not force them to give up anything you had given them, unless they commit a proven adultery. You shall treat them nicely. If you dislike them, you may dislike something wherein GOD has placed a lot of good.

What if you waited to repent, but still have a whole life in front of you – will you be forgiven?

Repentance cleans the slate for us. If we delay repenting that we are stuck with that burden for as long as we choose not to repent. For instance if I stick my hand in a fire unintentionally and immediately pull it out I might save my hand from getting burned, but if I choose to hold my hand in that fire for a duration of time then the damage is going to be that much greater.

Repentance: Cleaning the Slate

[9:11] If they repent and observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) and give the obligatory charity (Zakat), then they are your brethren in religion. We thus explain the revelations for people who know.

“Repentance is the key with which we can unlock the prison from inside. We hold that key within our hands, and agency is ours to use it.” – Boyd K. Packer

Repentance Key

Why are we allowed to be forgiven and Satan was not?

Satan refuses to accept that he was at fault and therefore will never repent. When God called him out as oppose to repenting he wanted to try to prove God wrong.

The Test Begins

[7:12] He said, “What prevented you from prostrating when I ordered you?” He said, “I am better than he; You created me from fire, and created him from mud.”
[7:13] He said, “Therefore, you must go down, for you are not to be arrogant here. Get out; you are debased.”
[7:14] He said, “Grant me a respite, until the Day of Resurrection.”
[7:15] He said, “You are granted a respite.”
[7:16] He said, “Since You have willed that I go astray,* I will skulk for them on Your straight path.
[7:17] “I will come to them from before them, and from behind them, and from their right, and from their left, and You will find that most of them are unappreciative.”

“Of all acts of man, repentance is the most diving. The greatest of all faults is to be conscious of none.” – Thomas Carlyle

Repentance

For us to truly repent we need to feel ashamed for what we have done. The next step is to correct the action.

[2:160] As for those who repent, reform, and proclaim, I redeem them. I am the Redeemer, Most Merciful.

The more we know the more we are responsible for.

Greater Miracles Bring Greater Responsibility*

[5:114] Said Jesus, the son of Mary, “Our god, our Lord, send down to us a feast from the sky. Let it bring plenty for each and every one of us, and a sign from You. Provide for us; You are the best Provider.”
[5:115] GOD said, “I am sending it down. Anyone among you who disbelieves after this, I will punish him as I never punished anyone else.”

[12:42] He then said to the one to be saved “Remember me at your lord.”* Thus, the devil caused him to forget his Lord, and, consequently, he remained in prison a few more years.
*12:42 When Joseph begged his companion to intercede with the king on his behalf, he exhibited dependence on other than God to be saved from the prison. This does not befit a true believer, and such a serious slip cost Joseph a few years in the prison. We learn from the Quran that only God can relieve any hardship that might befall us. A true believer trusts in God and depends totally on Him alone (1:5, 6:17, 8:17, 10:107).

Adultery and Society (4:15 – 4:16)

Health Quarantine

[4:15] Those who commit adultery among your women, you must have four witnesses against them, from among you. If they do bear witness, then you shall keep such women in their homes until they die, or until GOD creates an exit for them.*
*4:15 A woman witnessed by four people in the act of committing adultery on four different occasions, with four different partners, represents a danger to public health. Such a woman is a depository of germs, and a health quarantine protects the society from her. A good example of an exit that saves a quarantined woman is marriage – someone may wish to marry her, and thus protect her and the society.

[4:16] The couple who commits adultery shall be punished.* If they repent and reform, you shall leave them alone. GOD is Redeemer, Most Merciful.
*4:16 Public exposure of the sinners is a major deterrent, as we see in 5:38 and 24:2.

As indicated in the footnote of 4:1:

*4:1 This is the second longest sura, and the title indicates that it aims at defending the women’s rights. Any interpretation must favor the women’s rights, not the other way around.

Therefore we need to understand this verse in the context of women’s rights. Women are the corner stone of morality in a society. When a society has women that fall into this scenario then it is evident that the women are being victimized in that society by the men. To protect the women from falling into continuous sin it is in their best interest to be pulled from the society until God creates an exit for them. An example of this can be seen with the history of Joseph. Joseph was so good looking that the women were throwing themselves at him and tempting him to fall into sin by committing adultery. God saved Joseph from their schemes by placing Joseph in prison where he rose through the ranks ultimately to become the highest ranking Children of Israel in all of Egypt.

[12:33] He said, “My Lord, the prison is better than giving in to them. Unless You divert their scheming from me, I may desire them and behave like the ignorant ones.”

You cannot legislate morality. Morality is something that a society has to choose to adopt. We cannot expect that if a law passed that would ban adultery that people will stop the act. Until the minds of the people change there is little that can be done to stop it.

[13:11] Shifts (of angels) take turns, staying with each one of you – they are in front of you and behind you. They stay with you, and guard you in accordance with GOD’s commands. Thus, GOD does not change the condition of any people unless they themselves make the decision to change. If GOD wills any hardship for any people, no force can stop it. For they have none beside Him as Lord and Master.

The reason that adultery is so heavily discouraged in the Quran is that adultery leads to children outside of wedlock or even worse abortions. Children who are conceived outside of wedlock are more likely to be in single parent households where oftentimes the father leaves and the child ends up being neglected. Having a single parent household leads to poverty, crime, substance abuse etc. This victimizes the child and society.

Children form a single parent households account for:

63% of all youth suicides
70% of all teenage pregnancies
71% of all adolescent chemical/substance abuse
80% of all prison inmates
90% of all homeless and runaway children
75% of teenage pregnancies
63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes
85% of all children that exhibit behavioral disorders come from fatherless homes
80% of rapist motivated with displaced anger come from fatherless homes
71% of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes
70% of juveniles in state operated institutions come from fatherless homes
85% of all youths sitting in prisons grew up in a fatherless home

5x more likely to commit suicide
32x more likely to run away
20x more likely to have behavriol disorders
14x more likely to commit rape
9x more likely to drop out of school
10x more likely to abuse chemical substances
9x more likely to end up in state operated institutions
20x more likely to end up in prison

This is a major tax on the child, the society and the future generations…Remember the blanket rule in the Quran is that you are free to do whatever you want as long as you do not victimize anyone else. When a couple commits adultery they run the risk of brining an offspring in this world that will have many harsh statistics stacked up against them and this harms everyone in that society.

More often than not when a couple commits adultery and the women gets pregnant rather than having the child the couple decides to have an abortion instead, effectively murdering their child.

God Communicates With Us Through His Messenger (4:13 – 4:14)

God Communicates With Us Through His Messenger

[4:13] These are GOD’s laws. Those who obey GOD and His messenger, He will admit them into gardens with flowing streams, wherein they abide forever. This is the greatest triumph.
[4:14] As for the one who disobeys GOD and His messenger, and transgresses His laws, He will admit him into Hell, wherein he abides forever. He has incurred a shameful retribution.

These verses open by mentioning God’s laws and directs us towards obeying God and His messenger. By obeying God’s laws we are obeying God and His messenger. And if you disobey God and His messenger you are disobeying God’s laws.

When do we know when God’s messenger provides information if it is setting up a source beside God or should be obeyed and followed?

The information that the messenger provides in regards to our religion is mandated by God and is for our benefit. Even if we are unsure if it is his opinion or not we should still follow it as long as we can verify that the information came directly from him.

[49:1] O you who believe, do not place your opinion above that of GOD and His messenger. You shall reverence GOD. GOD is Hearer, Omniscient.

How God Communicates With Us

[42:51] No human being can communicate with GOD except through inspiration, or from behind a barrier, or by sending a messenger through whom He reveals what He wills. He is the Most High, Most Wise.

[42:52] Thus, we inspired to you a revelation proclaiming our commandments. You had no idea about the scripture, or faith. Yet, we made this a beacon to guide whomever we choose from among our servants. Surely, you guide in a straight path.

1989 Conference, Final speech by Dr. Rashad Khalifa

If you know that the information or commandment comes from God we should accept it even if we don’t understand the logic behind that information.

The Best Deal

[61:10] O you who believe, let Me inform you of a trade that will save you from painful retribution.
[61:11] Believe in GOD and His messenger and strive in the cause of GOD with your money and your lives. This is the best deal for you, if you only knew.
[61:12] In return, He forgives your sins, and admits you into gardens with flowing streams, with beautiful mansions in the gardens of Eden. This is the greatest triumph.
[61:13] Additionally, you get something you truly love: support from GOD and guaranteed victory. Give good news to the believers.
[61:14] O you who believe, be GOD’s supporters, like the disciples of Jesus, son of Mary. When he said to them, “Who are my supporters towards GOD,” they said, “We are GOD’s supporters.” Thus, a group from the Children of Israel believed, and another group disbelieved. We helped those who believed against their enemy, until they won.

Great examples of this can be found with the Children of Israel with the example of the heifer or entering Jerusalem.

The Heifer*

[2:67] Moses said to his people, “GOD commands you to sacrifice a heifer.” They said, “Are you mocking us?” He said, “GOD forbid, that I should behave like the ignorant ones.”

God Gives the Holy Land to Israel

[5:21] “O my people, enter the holy land that GOD has decreed for you, and do not rebel, lest you become losers.”
[5:22] They said, “O Moses, there are powerful people in it, and we will not enter it, unless they get out of it. If they get out, we are entering.”
[5:23] Two men who were reverent and blessed by GOD said, “Just enter the gate. If you just enter it, you will surely prevail. You must trust in GOD, if you are believers.” Despite All the Miracles They Saw [5:24] They said, “O Moses, we will never enter it, so long as they are in it. Therefore, go – you and your Lord – and fight. We are sitting right here.”
[5:25] He said, “My Lord, I can only control myself and my brother. So, allow us to part company with the wicked people.”
[5:26] He said, “Henceforth, it is forbidden them for forty years, during which they will roam the earth aimlessly. Do not grieve over such wicked people.”

Inheritance Distribution (4:7, 4:8, 4:11, 4:12, 4:176)

Below is the breakdown of the inheritance distribution according to the verses of the Quran to the best of our ability. God forgive us if we make an error in this representation. It is based on the five verses in the Quran that discuss this matter with specified allocations: 4:7, 4:8, 4:11, 4:12, 4:176

Women’s Inheritance Rights

[4:7] The men get a share of what the parents and the relatives leave behind. The women too shall get a share of what the parents and relatives leave behind. Whether it is a small or a large inheritance, (the women must get) a definite share.
[4:8] During distribution of the inheritances, if relatives, orphans, and needy persons are present, you shall give them therefrom, and treat them kindly.

If No Will Is Left*

[4:11] GOD decrees a will for the benefit of your children; the male gets twice the share of the female.* If the inheritors are only women, more than two, they get two-thirds of what is bequeathed. If only one daughter is left, she gets one-half. The parents of the deceased get one-sixth of the inheritance each, if the deceased has left any children. If he left no children, and his parents are the only inheritors, the mother gets one-third. If he has siblings, then the mother gets one-sixth. All this, after fulfilling any will* the deceased has left, and after paying off all debts. When it comes to your parents and your children, you do not know which of them is really the best to you and the most beneficial. This is GOD’s law. GOD is Omniscient, Most Wise.

Inheritance For the Spouses

[4:12] You get half of what your wives leave behind, if they had no children. If they had children, you get one-fourth of what they leave. All this, after fulfilling any will they had left, and after paying off all debts. They get one-fourth of what you leave behind, if you had no children. If you had children, they get one-eighth of what you bequeath. All this, after fulfilling any will you had left, and after paying off all debts. If the deceased man or woman was a loner, and leaves two siblings, male or female, each of them gets one-sixth of the inheritance. If there are more siblings, then they equally share one-third of the inheritance. All this, after fulfilling any will, and after paying off all debts, so that no one is hurt. This is a will decreed by GOD. GOD is Omniscient, Clement.

[4:176] They consult you; say, “GOD advises you concerning the single person. If one dies and leaves no children, and he had a sister, she gets half the inheritance. If she dies first, he inherits from her, if she left no children. If there were two sisters, they get two-thirds of the inheritance. If the siblings are men and women, the male gets twice the share of the female.” GOD thus clarifies for you, lest you go astray. GOD is fully aware of all things.

Here were some of the major take aways from the findings:

  • The table allocations represents what is paid after full filling any will, and after paying off all debts
  • The distribution can never exceed more than 100%. If it does that means that we did not do an accurate reading of the distribution.
  • The total percentages that are allocated per the verses of the Quran do not have to equal 100%. The distribution just guarantees that certain people receive a definite share of the inheritance under certain conditions.
  • The verses predominately emphasizes that the women must receive a definite share – as most the use cases are in regards to the women’s inheritance.
  • We are not 100% sure that this is correct and are open to any feedback

Husband

Wife

Loner Male

Loner Female

Couple notes to understand the table:

  • The top row of each table is the deceased party. The Quran only discusses four deceased individuals: Husband, Wife, Male Loner, Female Loner.
  • Loner is someone who does not have parents or children that are alive and only has siblings that are still living
  • The left column are the inheritors of the deceased
  • The yellow items are specifically mentioned in the Quran
  • The “x” represent items that are nullified in a scenario. For instance someone cannot have “only one daughter” and “multiple children” it would need to be one or the other.
  • The numbers that are not highlighted in yellow are not specifically mentioned in the Quran, but can be extrapolated from the rules in the verse.
  • A blank space is a possible inheritor, but without a specified definite share.

These are additional notes to the interpretation of the allocation:

The male gets twice the share of the female. (4:11)

  • This is the criteria we used if inheritors are specified, but not a specific allocation is stated.

If the inheritors are only women, more than two, they get two-thirds of what is bequeathed. (4:11)

  • There are several scenarios where there are only female inheritors (more than two) at which point they all share two-thirds of the inheritance. Some examples are two or more daughters and a mom, or in the case of a male father’s death he could leave one daughter, one mother, and one spouse. The expectation was that if a specified share is allocated to a particular women she will receive that share first and afterwards the non-specified women will share in the remaining inheritance. This shows that there is seniority in who must first receive their definite share before others are paid out.

If only one daughter is left, she gets one-half. (4:11)

  • This is a special scenario where there is only a single daughter inheritor and no other specified inheritors are alive.

The parents of the deceased get one-sixth of the inheritance each, if the deceased has left any children. (4:11)
If he left no children, and his parents are the only inheritors, the mother gets one-third. (4:11)
If he has siblings, then the mother gets one-sixth. (4:11)

  • This covers the inheritance for the parents. Interesting that the verse specifically mentions what the mother gets in the case of a single child and not what the father gets. We speculated that since the male gets twice the share of the female, that the father in this case would be two-thirds (twice the share of the mother).

You (husband) get half of what your wives leave behind, if they had no children. (4:12)
If they had children, you (husband) get one-fourth of what they leave.(4:12)

  • This covers what the husband inherits from the wife

They (wife) get one-fourth of what you (husband) leave behind, if you (husband) had no children. (4:12)
If you (husband) had children, they (wife) get one-eighth of what you (husband) bequeath. (4:12)

  • This covers what the wife inherits from the husband

If the deceased man or woman was a loner, (4:12)
“GOD advises you concerning the single person. If one dies and leaves no children, (4:176)

  • Loner and single person are categorized as the same person as the Arabic is one and the same for both these people stated in 7:12 and 7:176. The definition of a loner is someone who does not have parents or children that are alive. Therefore the inheritance goes to the siblings.

and leaves two siblings, male or female, each of them gets one-sixth (4:12)
If there are more siblings, then siblings equally share one-third of the inheritance. (4:12)

  • This is the condition if the deceased had two male siblings or two female siblings.

and he had a sister, she gets half the inheritance. (4:176)

  • This is what occurs if the loner is male and had only one sister

If she dies first, he inherits from her, if she left no children. (4:176)

  • This is what occurs if the loner is female and has one brother, but note that a share is not specified for the brother just that “he inherits from her”

If there were two sisters, they get two-thirds of the inheritance. (4:176)

  • This is a condition if there are two sisters and one of them dies the living sister gets two-thirds of the inheritance. Note: There are no guidelines or specified share to what happens if a male loner leaves one brother.

If the siblings are men and women, the male gets twice the share of the female (4:176)

  • For multiple siblings (male and/or female) that are not specifically specified in the verse the only requirement is that the male gets twice the share of the female.

Inheritance, Property Rights, Women and Orphans (4:7 – 4:10)

Women’s Inheritance Rights

[4:7] The men get a share of what the parents and the relatives leave behind. The women too shall get a share of what the parents and relatives leave behind. Whether it is a small or a large inheritance, (the women must get) a definite share.
[4:8] During distribution of the inheritances, if relatives, orphans, and needy persons are present, you shall give them therefrom, and treat them kindly.
[4:9] Those who are concerned about their own children, in case they leave them behind, shall observe GOD and be equitable.
[4:10] Those who consume the orphans’ properties unjustly, eat fire into their bellies, and will suffer in Hell.

4:7 shows the importance of making sure that women to receive a share of the inheritance.

As submitters we need to be extra careful when dealing with people’s property. This shows the importance of strong property rights. We need to take extra care to make sure that the most defenseless in society are defended and not neglected.

The best way to make sure our parents are taken care of is by observing righteousness since God is the one who provides for our loved ones and us.

[18:82] “As for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city. Under it, there was a treasure that belonged to them. Because their father was a righteous man, your Lord wanted them to grow up and attain full strength, then extract their treasure. Such is mercy from your Lord. I did none of that of my own volition. This is the explanation of the things you could not stand.”

And if we are unrighteous it can affect our future generations:

[72:27] “For if you let them, they will only mislead your servants and give birth to nothing but wicked disbelievers.

Do believers always have believing children?

Abraham had a disbelieving father and two prophets as sons. Noah had a son that disbelieved. Jacob had Joseph.

If you are righteous you become a blessing to those around you. It is a blessing from God to have believing children and believing spouses.

[52:21] For those who believed, and their children also followed them in belief, we will have their children join them. We never fail to reward them for any work. Every person is paid for what he did.

Every person on this planet since the time of Adam has what it takes to become a believer, but it is a choice that we actively make to decide to submit or not. The choice is ours.

The Winners and the Losers

[35:39] He is the One who made you inheritors of the earth. Subsequently, whoever chooses to disbelieve does so to his own detriment. The disbelief of the disbelievers only augments their Lord’s abhorrence towards them. The disbelief of the disbelievers plunges them deeper into loss.

[19:75] Say, “Those who choose to go astray, the Most Gracious will lead them on, until they see what is promised for them – either the retribution or the Hour. That is when they find out who really is worse off, and weaker in power.” [19:76] GOD augments the guidance of those who choose to be guided. For the good deeds are eternally rewarded by your Lord, and bring far better returns.

Inheritance and Maturity (4:4 – 4:6)

[4:4] You shall give the women their due dowries, equitably. If they willingly forfeit anything, then you may accept it; it is rightfully yours.
[4:5] Do not give immature orphans the properties that GOD has entrusted with you as guardians. You shall provide for them therefrom, and clothe them, and treat them kindly.
[4:6] You shall test the orphans when they reach puberty. As soon as you find them mature enough, give them their property. Do not consume it extravagantly in a hurry, before they grow up. The rich guardian shall not charge any wage, but the poor guardian may charge equitably. When you give them their properties, you shall have witnesses. GOD suffices as Reckoner.
